Execution Without Strategy Is Just Busy Work
Are you an Integrator who takes real pride in the well-oiled machine you’ve built? Good - that’s not nothing and I applaud you for reaching this point! Filing down the sharp edges, closing the gaps, removing the bottlenecks across an org is a genuine feat, and most people never get there.
Now here’s the question I’d ask you to sit with: what’s the strategy carrying your business through the next 5, 10 years?
Because efficiency isn’t the same thing as direction. You can run the tightest operation in your market and still be busy running in a circle. A business doesn’t survive the test of time by being exceptional at busy work - it survives by knowing where all that execution is pointed.
I think about this constantly as an Interim/Fractional Integrator. My time with any one client is short (6 to 24 months) which means I don’t get the luxury of slowly discovering what a business needs. I have to move fast on all 6 components of EOS: shoring up systems, building the infrastructure that lets a business scale, and the hardest part to rush… defining a strategy that actually illuminates the next chapter of the business’ life.
That last piece is where most of us get stuck. Systems and structure have relatively standardized playbooks. Strategy doesn’t. It takes market fluency, industry pattern-recognition, and the ability to creatively project a future shaped by what your business actually offers. There’s a reason “strategist” is a trained profession, and there’s a reason SMBs can’t afford to hire one.
That gap is what pulled me in when I was invited to beta test an AI tool built by a group of sharp business and tech minds: Growth Navigator by Waverock. I spent two days using it to build out a strategy with one of my own clients, and it genuinely changed how I think about what’s possible for businesses our size.
It sits in the same family as the tools we already lean on to run EOS well - think of the operational rigor of EOS One, Ninety, or Strety - except it’s solving a different problem: it’s built specifically to help small and mid-size businesses do the kind of strategic thinking that used to require a $30k consulting engagement. And because it outputs strategic pillars formatted in a cadence that aligns with the EOS rhythm, what you walk into your next Quarterly or Annual with isn’t just an idea - it’s already planning-session-ready.
What made me want to bring this to the wider SMB community isn’t the tool itself, honestly - it’s what it makes possible. Businesses like the ones I work with are competing against the companies with strategy budgets we’ll probably never have. What happens when the gap starts to close? What’s the ceiling for an SMB that’s already disciplined operationally and just needed the strategic edge to match?
You don’t need a PhD in strategy or a war chest of cash flow to find out.
If you’re a Visionary - you already have the big idea. What you’re often missing is a way to pressure-test it against real market data before you bet the leadership team’s time on it. This is a way to do that thinking out loud, collaboratively, before it becomes a plan on paper.
If you’re an Integrator - you know the pull toward becoming a true strategic 2nd-in-Command, not just the person who makes the trains run on time. This is a way to lead your leadership team through that thinking directly, and walk out with an actionable roadmap that’s yours to keep and adjust quarter over quarter.
If you’re an EOS Implementer - bring this to your leadership team as a thinking tool, not an answer key. I’ve watched teams walk into planning sessions with sharper priorities and clearer V/TO mapping simply because they’d done this exercise first.
None of this replaces the hard, human work of deciding what your business becomes. But it can make sure that work starts from a stronger place - informed, tested, and shared across the people who have to execute it.
If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably already felt the tension I opened with: you’re great at the doing, and you’re ready to be just as intentional about the direction. That’s worth pursuing.
P.S. If you want to try Growth Navigator for yourself, use the code THEGROWTHCOMPASS for $50 off your one-time fee.
Full transparency: I earn a small commission if you use it. I'm sharing it anyway because I watched it change how a real client thought about their next five years, and I'd love for you to have that same head start. One-time fee, not another monthly subscription.
